C#ns*r#d W*rds in SFEX+@

Da22 suggested as a throwaway remark that I make a post on censorship. That reminded me of something I once happened across when poking at SFEX+@. Apologies/heads-up for NSFW abbreviations ahead.

Like most games with a standard 3-letter name field for the high score table, Street Fighter EX + Alpha auto-corrects undesirable entries (to “CAP” in this case).

This list is found in a file containing text strings for the game on the PS1 disc. As it’s an arcade port the banned terms are presumably inherited from/shared with the SFEX coin-op. I haven’t double-checked all of these and may have inadvertently omitted a couple or listed ones taken from the default High Score table.

You can tell a lot about what advertisers think/know of you from which adverts they run during a TV show. Same applies here, I suppose, from the terrorist organisation abbreviations to the mildest of curse words to the lazy players’ go-to “AAA“. (Reader, I am that player).

The obvious ones are always going to be censored, I guess, but interesting to see things one wouldn’t have thought of there. Bloody Roar definitely had a similar list, because I remember test-swearing on that high score table around the same time, haha!
