Paul Rutherford – Get Real

Found this in the archive – don’t remember it or where it came from at all, but it’s a good tune. Paul Rutherford was a vocalist in Frankie Goes To Hollywood and this, his debut solo single, was produced by Mark White and Martin Fry of ABC. Released in 1988, there’s a strong Acid House influence to the track, but the moody vocal sets it apart from many other tunes of the era. My favourite part is the big squidgy acid bass line that comes in after the beat break (around 5:30) – the louder you play it, the better it sounds!

In a complete inversion of my expectations I found the music great and the vocals a bit undercommited/nothing-y. Didn’t seem to add anything to the track. Def liking it, good stuff!
