If The Bomb Drops…

In 1980 the BBC showed this episode of Panorama, presented by a youthful Jeremy Paxman. Its subject is the failure of successive UK governments to adequately prepare the populace for any potential nuclear exchange. Combining Two Tribes-recollecting Protect And Survive-style government information films with Paxo-on-the-street (standout response: “You’ve ‘ad it, ain’t ya?”) and as-it-happens coverage of an official mock bomb drop exercise, the whole conveys, well, something that Zack Snyder‘s take on Watchmen whiffed on.

I’ve never seen the infamous Threads and having watched this, then read up a bit more on it (e.g. even the Amazon reviews) I don’t think I’ll be up to it any time soon. Not massively keen on pushing any buttons either.

Here’s that Frankie Goes To Hollywood video again, if you’d prefer.

Now if you begin to feel an intense and crushing feeling of religious terror at the concept, don’t be alarmed. That indicates only that you are still sane.

Well that was a nice documentary to scare the pants off anyone, typical Paxman!
